What qualifies as "innovation" in your design field?
Innovation in animation usually lies in the raw and natural talent of the animator. Everyone has the same resources, therefore it's up to the animator or in this case a production team; considering that the most public innovation, if any, and probably the most popular is seen through animated feature films.
What types of problems or dilemmas similar to those that Griffith encounters are you aware of in your design field?
Griffith encountered several problems. One problem in particular is the obstacle of time and money. When Griffith was developing new wind turbine planes while innovative, there was no market for them. The idea was invested in, it just wasn't successful. Similarly, in animation, certain feature films take a lot of time and money to be successful. On the flip side, the more time and money you invest into a film, the higher the risk you are taking in terms of profit or success. Consider the 2009 live-action/animated film "Avatar"; a number of innovative visual effects techniques were used in its production. According to Cameron, work on the film had been delayed since the 1990s to allow the techniques and technologies to reach the necessary degree of advancement to adequately portray his vision of the film. Fortunately, unlike in Griffith's case, the project was successful.
How are these problems being solved?
Taking advantage of technological advances in hardware and software no matter the field and apply it as time allows. Griffith as innovative and smart as he is still had to do this.
I agree with your approach to solving the problem that it takes too long to produce an animation. Just like Industrial and other designers, animators need to take advantage of new technology. There are always companies upgrading technology to make our lives easier and speed up processes. Being that I am an Industrial Designer, can you tell me, what do you classify as "taking too long" on an animation? Given that you need to incorporate the effort an animator puts into their work and how skilled they are.
ReplyDeleteIn the early days of animation around the late 19th century, pictures that took hours to develop each photo and then you had to put them on film and then they would be sequenced through a heavy mechanical viewer, even then the film was only 5 seconds and they were pretty dull, it probably took weeks. Today we have digital photos that we can take in less than a second, and animations are visually interesting but even now 4 seconds of screen time on an animated feature film usually consists of 250 frames which take a week to make. So time has been cut down significantly but I don't know exactly if there's such a thing as taking too long on an animation unless you have a deadline, this field requires a lot of patience
ReplyDeleteI agree with your response to innovation in animation as it relates to Griffith and his plight to greatness. You made a valid point regarding everyone having similar resources, but everyone does not attain the same measure of success due to the individual pursuit and creativity of the person. Creativity and knowing how to use essential resources can set great designers apart from mediocre.
ReplyDeleteNicholas seems to be saying that the more time and money you invest into making an animation the more successful it will be; I agree because people want better quality and in order to have that it takes an animator a lot of time, effort, and money in order to great application and sell better. In my own research on technology, it seems that it keeps advancing in order to get the better quality that people want. In this case you pay more to get the newer technology and to sell more. On the other hand, I've also found that most of the time you have to take the high risk of succeeding or failing.
